NOTICE OF VACANCY IN OFFICE AND NOMINATION PROCEDURES

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY CORONER

This notice is to inform the public of the resignation of Champaign Coroner Duane Northrup effective December 1, 2023. Duane has served the people of Champaign County for more than 22 years as Champaign County Coroner with distinction and professionalism.

The Champaign County Republican Party will be accepting applications from those who live within the boundaries Champaign County to be considered for nomination to serve Coroner Northrup’s remaining term, ending November 30, 2024. The elected Precinct Committeepersons of the Champaign County Republican Party will make this selection.

Interested persons should email their completed application to [email protected]. Applications will be due by Friday, December 15, 2023, at 6pm.

The Champaign County Republican Party will host a Special Meeting of Precinct Committpersons on Saturday, January 13, 2024, 2:00PM, at Hensley Township Building 3001 W, Hensley Rd., Champaign, IL 61822 to select the party’s nominee for the vacant position of County Coroner.

Applicants will be given the opportunity to speak and answer questions in front of the voting Precinct Committeepersons. Voting will take place following this question and answer period. Only elected Precinct Committeepersons will be present for voting – all guests and candidates will be asked to leave during the vote.

The name of nominee of the Champaign County Republican Party will then be forwarded to the Champaign County Board Chairperson to be voted on and confirmed by the full Champaign County Board at their regular meeting on January 18, 2024, 6:30PM, Champaign County Board Shields-Carter Meeting Room, Brookens Administration Center 1776 E Washington St, Urbana, IL 61802. The appointed County Coroner’s term will begin immediately upon confirmation by the County Board.

“We cannot repeat the mismanagement and failure to perform that takes place too often in Champaign County government today. Just look at the election of a disinterested Democrat County Treasurer in 2018, and subsequent appointments of multiple unqualified and incapable Democrat replacements. The County Coroner will be working with families that in many cases are facing unimaginable sadness. The Champaign County Republican Party will ensure that the next Coroner is a capable, qualified, caring, and compassionate office holder, just like Duane Northrup has been,” said Jim McGuire, County Republican Chairman.

This notice is to inform the public of the resignation of Jim Goss from his seat on the Champaign County Board - District 1. Jim has served Champaign County for over 10 years on the County Board, local governments, through farming and farm management. His over 10 years of service and dedication to the residents of Champaign County on the county board will be missed.

The Champaign County Republican Party will be accepting applications from those who live within County Board District 1’s boundaries to be considered for nomination by the Elected Precinct Committee-people within the CB district 1. Applications for nomination must be filed by email to [email protected] by Tuesday October 10th at 6pm (See nomination application criteria below).

The Champaign County Republican Party will host a Special Meeting on Thursday Oct, 12th at 5:30PM at Hensley Township Building 3001 W, Hensley RD Champaign IL 61822. A meeting in which the Elected Precinct Committee-people within County Board District 1 will choose the party’s nominee for the open County Board seat. Applicants will be given the opportunity to speak and answer questions in front of the voting Precinct Committee-people. The vote will take place in private - applicants will be asked to leave the location when the vote occurs.

If nominated by the Elected Precinct Committee-people within County Board District 1, the nominee will then be voted on and confirmed by the Full Champaign County Board at their regular meeting on Oct, 19th at 6:30PM at Champaign County Board Shields-Carter Meeting Room, Brookens Administration Center 1776 E Washington St, Urbana, IL 61802

A lot has changed since the November election.  Below are highlights (or lowlights) of what has happened and what most likely will happen. Bonus:  Also, as you read below you will discover what is the official snake of Illinois.

At the local level:

• Scott Bennett, State Senator for the 52^nd District passed away unexpectedly. District 52 represents a portion of Champaign County and Vermillion County.  After his funeral the knives came out quickly.  Better angels prevailed and City of Champaign Township Assessor Paul Faraci was appointed to take his place.
• Tom Bennett, Scott’s uncle, was appointed as the new State Senator for District 53, to take Jason Barickman’s (R-Bloomington) place. Tom, 66 years old, has served as a representative in the 106^th district since 2015.  He is an advocate for 2^nd Amendment Rights, low taxes, and being pro-life.
• Family law attorneys filed some 85 requests to have newly elected Judge Beckett taken off their cases.  (The county is missing Judge Sam Limentato.)
